There is nothing worse for a foodie (perhaps, other than a terrible meal) than getting sick. Taste buds – obliterated. To the point where I almost question my ability to ever taste again. It’s pretty dire, folks. You only taste the base of the flavor – salty, sweet or bland – in a really bland way. Almost like eating socks, or something.
Speaking of – remember that book? Socks for Supper?
Surviving off cheese and milk is a small dream of mine. But this book is super humbling and I was reminded of it when I thought of how I loose my taste when sick. Sometimes it lasts for a day, only to come back faintly and then disappear again. A travesty, I tell you.
But then there’s soup, Eddie’s Soup:
We had recently ordered Chinese food from a local Asian Fusion place called KPB Asian Bistro (which we really love) and Eddie got Wonton Soup that barely had any broth. And we are brothy folks (so WTF KPB?). So when I fell ill, Eddie made what was the left of this soup with legit chicken broth and all the usual fixings – sriracha, green onions and egg. So amazing, so HOT. It literally was burning on the way down, but that was my bronchitis slowly dying a painful, fire-y death.
Almost two weeks later, we’re almost healed. Yes – both Eddie and I got sick, but I got the shit end of the sick-y stick. I get bronchitis at least once a year. <insert eye roll emoji here> I don’t have time for this shit.
From there it was a slow roll from barely eating to trying everything to check and see if I could taste it. The first thing I could really taste was an amazing turkey and pastrami sandwich made by Eddie on rolls from an amazing Italian joint called Cortina’s Italian Market – in Anaheim, but I didn’t document it. It was a quick scarf-down before we went to see the new Spider-Man movie (AH-mazing, by the way).
Once I was able to function again, and working from home to fully recover, I made Eddie take me to (fairly) new local taco joint called Gonzo’s Tacos & Beer. Full post on this one later this week, but here’s a sneak preview:
Fully loaded tacos, amazing sauces and my very first Mulitas (basically a Mexican pizza). I tasted most of it.
Then what followed were meals of varied proportions:
Turkey Club Sandwich
*sourdough (always) – fresh basil, turkey, provolone & bacon*
Pork & Potatoes
*Pork grilled on cast iron, baked potato with green onions, sour cream,
sriracha & asparagus*
Super Mario Roll
*Sushi Joint – scallop wrapped in yellowtail and
avocado (and possibly something else..)*
Day & Nite Groceries & Taqueria
*Taquitos, tacos, burrito, quesadilla*
And then there was CPK
*Pizza & Salad Lunch Specials + Avocado Egg Rolls*
I swear we were only there because we had a gift card to Bath & Bodyworks and went to the mall and were super hungry after our dumb cashier experience at the store. It was delicious.
As of today, my taste is fully back and I’m almost done with being sick. Hopefully we’ll do a lot more homemade meals for the next few weeks, and tonight was a good start…
Braised Beef Shank & Mash
The AC made it cold it enough to appreciate the warm bellies.
What are you eating tonight?
